At the Aidenbachstrasse bus station, which I pass every day, I set out a bowl of water due to the summer heat. This is permitted - in contrast, feeding city pigeons in Munich is considered a violation of animal welfare laws and is strictly prohibited under penalty. The common, yet mistaken, belief is that the population (of city pigeons) will decline if they are not fed. And indeed they do - by starving to death in misery! I must reiterate: Pigeon lofts - where eggs are humanely swapped for dummy eggs - offer a controlled method for reducing the population. Given their artificially bred compulsion to breed 10 to 12 times a year (producing two chicks per clutch), pigeon lofts make absolute sense; pigeons are "stress breeders" - meaning they breed even more when they are starving. The watery consistency of their droppings - known as "starvation feces" - reveals that virtually all city pigeons (unless they have access to a pigeon loft) are malnourished or on the verge of starvation. This constitutes animal cruelty! The "Augsburg Model" here successfully and humanely manages the city pigeon population. Please set out bowls of water - not only for wild birds and other wildlife, but also for city pigeons, which are, after all, known to be abandoned domestic animals: wedding doves, racing pigeons, and homing pigeons.
